home owners insurance claims and doing repairs yourself?

I would like any information regarding submitting receipts for repairs that need to be done to my home. I have a large deductable and the repair expenses go beyond the claim payment. Can I hire a handy man or do the work myself? What documentation do I need to provide my insurance company as proof that the work is completed.

You can - but the insurance company can cancel you if the guy doing the repairs is required to be licensed, and isn't (example, a plumber). Also, depending on the type of claim, you might need to get a permit to do the repairs - which could ALSO require a license.

Anyway, to prove the repairs were done, you'll need photos and the receipts for the supplies. Also, if you do work yourself, log the hours you put into it.

Keep in mind, if you do a rotten job the first time, the insurance company won't pay a second time - and won't cover any mistakes you make with the repairs.

Filing insurance claims for a person hit by a car in Michigan?

In Michigan, if a person was hit by a neighbor's car on the neighbor's property, who do they file a claim with?

The neighbor's insurance?

Or their own? If it is their own, why?

Thanks.

JoeCool, I suggest you locate a nearby auto insurance agent to help. Since I live in Virginia I can't suggest an agent in Michigan, but here is an resource that can help you. http://www.easyautoinsuranceguide.com/Michigan-Car-Insurance.html

UK car insurance: does reporting an accident where neither side claims affect your No Claims Bonus?

I insure my car with Admiral insurance in the UK. Recently I was involved in a very minor accident, for which I do not intend to claim. It is not clear whether the other party will claim from their insurance or not. If I report the accident to my insurer, even if neither side actually puts in a claim pertaining to the accident, will this be considered as a claim for working out my No Claims Bonus next year?

I had a similar situation a few months ago. Someone clipped my back bumper, no major damage, and no injuries (thankfully). She was humming and hawing about whether she should put it through her insurance.
What I did was to straight away report the incident to my local garda station, just to have the incident on record, and I phoned my insurance company the following day. I didn't give my name, just made the specific enquiry - did I have to officially inform them of an incident in which I had no liability and no claim in. They told me I didn't, so I didn't officially inform them of anything!
The best thing always is to get any minor incident on record in your local police station - that way, you have some recourse if the other party decides to change their story - that happened once to a friend of mine, who ended up getting completely scr*wed by the other party.

Good luck.

Do you loose No-claims bonus after an accident that wast your fault?

This year I had a car accient that wasn't my fault, but now my renewal has come through and I have zero no-claims bonus. Is The other party is paying compensation etc so does it still count as a claim? If so am I entitled to claim the difference (as my insurance has jumped from around £500 to over £1000!) I'd apreciate hearing from anyone who has any knowledge or suggestions! Thanks.

The way it works is you report to your insurers, who will then claim off the other party's insurers. If the other party's insurers accept the claim then they will be paying out, not yours, so you won't lose your NCB. There is no claim on your cover.

I'd contact your insurers to establish what is going on - it may be that the NCB is suspended temporarily while the bickering between insurance companies is going on, but they should tell you what's happening. Something similar happened to me once, it turned out that some clerk in their office had put a tick in the wrong box . . .

what happens when the insurance limits aren't enough to pay my bodily injury claim?

I was a passenger in an auto accident in June where my arm was broken. What happens if the at fault person's insurance and the underinsured limits from the car I was in is still not enough to pay my claim? Does it then become a personal lawsuit? I think it will come to that because my doc says this injury is one that may not heal. I'm praying it does, but if it doesn't he's going to have to do surgery again. That wouldn't be until next year and I would have to go through all that pain of healing all over again.

Wow, that's too bad! We like to think that Underinsured Motorist will keep you from having to go at a lawsuit yourself.

Yes, you're going to have to sue the person that was at-fault directly. Their insurance has been maxed out, so no matter how many people are going to reply to this question with "MAKE THE LAWYER GET THE INSURANCE COMPANY TO PAY!!!11", there just isn't any money there anymore. So your next step, unfortunately, is to take care of it yourself. The horrible part here is that the chances of you having to pay this out of pocket until you can collect money from them is very, very high. This is why we should always be encouraging people to carry those limits as high as they can! Things like this happen and the only person that is screwed is the person that is already a victim. It's horrible.

Best of luck to you and I hope your injuries get better!
